Kenya Set to Unveil National AI Strategy This Week

Kenya is poised to take a major leap into the future of technology with the highly anticipated unveiling of its National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy later this week.

The groundbreaking initiative, led by the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, aims to position Kenya as a leader in AI development and responsible innovation in Africa.

According to government sources, the strategy will outline a national roadmap for integrating AI across key sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, education, and public service. It will also address critical issues such as ethical AI use, data privacy, digital infrastructure, and the creation of AI-driven job opportunities.

“This strategy is a game-changer,” said ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo. “AI is not just a technology—it’s a new engine for economic transformation, and Kenya intends to lead the way in Africa.”

Kenya has already made strides in digital innovation, with Nairobi earning the nickname “Silicon Savannah” for its vibrant tech startup ecosystem. The new AI framework is expected to build on this momentum by supporting research and development, funding AI startups, and fostering collaboration between academia, government, and the private sector.

Experts say the move could unlock massive potential for growth, helping Kenya solve complex challenges like food insecurity, disease outbreaks, and unemployment with AI-powered tools and insights.

The launch comes at a time when global interest in AI governance is at an all-time high, with countries racing to create clear regulations and frameworks for safe and inclusive use.

“We must act now to harness AI responsibly,” said Dr. Kamau Githaiga, a tech policy analyst. “This strategy will help ensure that Kenya builds a future where technology empowers—not replaces—people.”

The full AI strategy is expected to be unveiled at a national digital economy forum in Nairobi, with participation from leading AI experts, investors, government officials, and development partners.
